“We Don’t Allow YOUR Kind Here!”

By Bixyl Shuftan

A few days ago, one of my foxfolk friends was exploring around, and wanting to rezz some items came across a sandboox at an Italian beach villiage. Like the majority of places he had seen, all were in normal human avies, “mature content and a nude beach.” Just after getting there, “I was approached by a resident and told that I had to reove my ‘ mask.’ I was polite and said that I wasn't wearing a mask that this was my personna.” But the local persisted, so my friend left. Not long afterwards, he told the story to another fox friend of his whom got irritated and insisted he take him and some others online at the time over, most furred but one neko joined in, “We were pretty civil, except for **** calling them racists. ... they bounced us out and banned us from the area."

When a couple others from the incident arrived, they told me a little more, one saying she took on the appearance of a naked hermapodite with a huge appendage and didn’t get banned until changing back to a clean furry. They asked me to see the scene for myself, and ported me to a spot next to the beach village. I walked in, the scene rezzing more slowly than normal. Just across the bridge was a sign, and one resident nearby. So I stood on the bridge for a while, waited for the sign to fully rez, and sure enough it stated “No Furry” alongside “No monsters” and the usual behaviors against intimate activity in the open and gunfire. The resident did nothing, though might have been away from the keyboard, so I turned around and left. Porting to a tavern, we had a long talk about the place.

It’s my experience that incidents like this are very rare in Second Life. Most places are happy to have anyone whom is not bothering anyone, especially if they’re spending money. But considering how treatment one sees as unfair sticks in one’s mind, when someone does end up booted from a place because of his looks, it is certainly remembered.

Why do some places limit what avatars can come in? Some are roleplay sims that have rules against certain avatars, but will also boot anyone not following the dress code or anything else of a strict set of guidelines, that is, if they let anyone outside their group in at all. I have heard no real complaints about their policies.

Then there was the one single place I was asked to leave because of my avatar’s appearance. Someone from a charity group sent me a complaint about a formal dress nightclub only allowing in human avatars. I decided to check things out for myself, put on my Dana Delight’s tuxedo, and ported over. Seeing a lady by the door, I chatted with her for a few minutes, and she clearly welcomed me. Going in, no one bothered me at first, but the place was laggy as heck. I was about to conclude the place was a false alarm and port out, when a lady approached me and IMed me, “Excuse me ... could you please change to a human avatar?” My response, “The lady at the door didn’t have a problem with me. And in the year and a half I’ve been here, not a single place I’ve been to has had a problem with my appearance.” “I’m truly sorry, but we have a dress code, and we still need you to change.” I was irritated, no sign of a problem at the door and now this. But how much was a place too laggy to stay worth making a fuss over? So I ported out. Most likely the lag would keep away more people than anything I could do or say.

So why did they have a problem? It may be they saw avatars as an extension on the dress code, since people in Second Life have the ability change their shape, as well as their clothes. Trouble is, many people, both furry and normal people, dislike changing their avatar’s look. “I have this nagging fear that I might not be able to change back,” one person told me. In any event, no other place before, or after, had a problem with my foxfolk look. It’s notable that a few weeks later, I was invited to a live classical music performance in a place that was *really* high class and elegant. No one had a problem with my avatar’s look (and Dana's tuxedo fit in nicely).

Then there’s the scenerio that my furred freinds think of most often, getting tossed out “just because” by someone being a real jerk about it. I was a semi-witness to one example. I once joined a group for a pirate club an event organizer I knew liked to go to. One day, one of the pirates started a group chat, “Don’t go to *****. I went there, and they refused to sell me anything, telling me ‘We don’t allow YOUR kind here!’ .“ The immediate response was, “WHOAH! They’re gonna get it now!” This was followed by cries of righteous indignation, and calls for going to the sim to protest or teach them a lesson.

I didn’t get to the scene until later. According to the group chat, the furred pirates began porting over to the place, and before long the local ones threw up a “No admittance” barrier. With no way to get in, the tailed buccaneers cursed for a while, then gave up. The guy who started this then told everyone he might as well shop elsewhere. He soon told the group, “Hey guys, I finally found a place. They even have a furry among them.” And so ended the fight between what one guy called “the tail pirates versus the butt pirates.”

Why do some people have problems with a guy or girl in a furball avatar? The subject can be an article on itself. Penance Sautereau did a two-part article that can be read here and here. But what do do about the few whom take things to the point of banning people minding their own business from sims? That was the subject of a lengthy discussion between me and other furballs.

Second Life’s Community Standards begins with this statement, “The goals of the Community Standards are simple: treat each other with respect and without harassment, adhere to local standards as indicated by simulator ratings, and refrain from any hate activity which slurs a real-world individual or real-world community.” Even if the banning of people because of their avatars is not against the letter of the rules, it certainly goes against the spirit, in my opinion.

By all means, this kind of problem is not limited to furred avies. I have heard stories of players with normal human appearances being subject to harassment in sims populated by furred residents. One former friend of mine told me via instant message about going to a place recommended by me, and treated harshly by some local furballs, “I had no idea furries could be so cruel!” She would then have nothing to do with furs again. A couple of my friends who prefer to appear normal human told me they themselves had gone through some of this kind of harassment.

The antics of the “human-haters” I find to be as silly as their anti-furball counterparts, if not moreso. Aren’t we all human behind our keyboards? I’ve had a couple mild-mannered furballs say normal human avatars look unnatural and zombielike to them, falling into what some call the "Uncanny Alley," but I’ve never gotten much of an answer from the few haters I’ve come across.

These rare but annoying incidents make me think a little of one bit of movie trivia I came across. Fans of the “Planet of the Apes” movie occasionally recall one of the themes was it’s anti-racism message - the gorillas could only be soldiers, the orangutans were limited to sciences and study, etc. Just how well the message reached the actors was brought into question one day. The time it took to put on the makeup was so long, actors would eat lunch still in costume, and did so in a designated lunch area. Once, one of the “apes” happened to look around, and noticed that the place had segregated itself. The gorillas were in one area, the orangutans in another, and the chimpanzees in a third. Even though everyone was human underneath, they had broken up into groups based on their costumes!

With this in mind, maybe it’s a little less surprising some are reluctant to explore places populated by another type of avatar. But in the opinion of this Second Life resident, it doesn’t excuse a few monkeying around with our freedom of movement.

Have any of you the readers experienced this kind of treatment? Feel free to tell your story in the comment section below.

SLoop - "Mythxels"

Did you ever had the feeling that you wanted to go/
Still have the feeling that you wanted to stay…/
That's from an old Jimmy Durante's song that explains perfectly well how I felt about SL, when I first logged in and became an overwhelmed cyber-challenged Newbie.
I was never hooked on video games, my mind had already been captured by the tales and the myths books and movies told.
So, what was keeping me?
It didn't take long to discover that some of those tales and myths that had molded my mind had found their way into this virtual life, and had brought their magic along.
Please, bear with me.
First: you are provided with an avatar. It takes a while to have it look the way you want… but when that happens, you have the perfect mask. And behind the mask: the Phantom hides. Unless we are relentless narcissists, most of us always feel we have to hide our real selves to the world.
So we start secretly enjoying that. We have an avatar that whispers in our ears:
"Open up your mind/let your fantasies unwind/you know you cannot fight/the darkness of the music of the night."
Start to go/
Change your mind/
Here you discover that if we wish to remain looking the same… for ever… (let's not forget most people in SL choose to look young and lovely), then your avatar becomes Dorian's Gray.
And it's us, in RL, who become the avi's portraits, and grow old and wither instead of them.
It's tough you had the feelin that you wanted to go/
Still have the feeling that you wanted to stay/
So you run around as the Phantom that has become beautiful and immune to time and start prancing from sim to sim until you come across the Rabbit, who without asking your permission teleports you through his rabbit hole. And we edit and click to be able to get into the beautiful garden, because we realize we will finally have a real chance to get invited by the dangerous Queen Of Hearts to play croquet.
It's tough to have the feeling that you wanted to go/
Still have the feeling that you wanted to stay/
And then is when you realize you are in Neverland.
You finally flew to that island where we all get to be children again, and we choose to be Peter Pan, or Captain Hook, or the Lost Kids, untill Wendy talks us into our senses and makes us turn off our computers.
We had enough for this day.
Did you ever had the feeling that you wanted to go/
Still have the feeling that you wanted to stay?"
Next time you are in doubt, look at the SL midnight sky. You'll see your shadow fly pass across the pixel moon.
Next time you log out…do it slowly. And like the Cheshire Cat, your grin will remain.

Newbie Tip #2- Opening Store Bags

This is a skill that still stumps even the well seasoned of us. How to get our newly bought items out of their package. A simple skill that when you are in a rush can leave you wearing the advertisement and not the product.
Remember you can only open items if you are in a public area or if you have a group tag for the area you are in.

Step #1: After you have bought your item look under the Recent Items tag for the new product. Once you have found it click on it. A drop down menu should appear.

Step#2: If it is a piece of clothing, the words ADD TO OUTFIT should appear. If so click on this. It will automatically change your outfit for you. If the word WEAR appears, then you might end up with it attached to your arm. If this happens, then you need to click on the item again and choose DETACH. This will let you start over.

Step #3: Click on the square beside the name of the item and drag it onto the ground.

Step #4: Click on the object. A pie chart should appear. Choose the word OPEN. Another menu will pop-up saying Copy to inventory or Move to inventory. Choose this button. Now click on the object again, another pie chart will appear, this time choose TAKE. This puts the item you bought back into your inventory there for not leaving it out for someone else to take. Most will show up in your Recent Items tab but always check your Lost and Found just in case.

If you have bought an item that is not clothing, simply click on the square beside the items name and drag it onto the ground. Then proceed to click on the object and chose in your pie chart Open. Then choose the Move/Copy to inventory button. Once you have done this click on the object again choosing Take from the pie chart.

Getting an item is called Rezzing. Always remember to take back into your inventory anything that you have rezzed in a public spot.

HappyFeline Tigergirl and her "Fun Rave Dance Cult"

I've found myself going to Luskwood more often since the Fortellia club closed down. Often, nothing much was going on. Other times someone would start up the music, and a small dance party would start. I usually saw just a few dancers, though some could bring in more with lively music.
Recently, one woman has been making appearances in Luskwood, passing out free copies of dance party gear, and calling everyone onto the floor to swing to the music. HappyFeline Tigergirl, the founder of the "Fun Rave Dance Cult," has been doing her best to stir up fun when she appears at the tree platform.
HappyFeline came into Second Life in March 2008, coming up with the idea of encouraging people to dance shortly there after. "I really just started to make parties to get them up and mixing," she told me, "and then some told me it was so nice to have new friends and fun. Now I seem to have a new job."
The "Rave" gear HappyFeline passes out consist of glowsticks, flashy batons, dark avatar-sizes globes that show just a colorful silhouette of the dancer inside, globes of bright flashy colors, and others. Too many dancers with too much flash means some people nearby will start to lag, so some just dance with a glowstick in hand, or wear a fancy avatar while dancing.
Of her favorite locations to start up a dance party, HappyFeline considered Luskwood "My specialty," making some occasional rounds at Rocket City. She has been looking for other areas to hold a party, wanting to keep people happy, "I love getting notes (saying) that things cheered them up."
No doubt she'll continue.

Newbie Tip #1 : Hair

We have all done it. Lived the first few days or weeks with the Newbie hairdos. Not very flattering, but very easy to fix. Once you have gotten some Lindens you will be able to buy yourself a new do.

After having looked in the Search for Hair and arriving at your shop of choice, always buy a demo. Most demos cost only $1 Linden, some are even free. The last thing you want is to waste your Lindens on hair that just does not suite you (trust me I have made that mistake too)

Buying a Demo: When you find a style you think might look good on you, simply click on the image marked Demo. A pie graph should appear with the word Buy or Pay. Click on the Buy/Pay section.

Step 1: You need to go to Appearance and click on Hair then Style. Make yourself BALD by playing with the volume and length of your style.
Step 2:You open your Inventory, go to the tab Recent Items and find the Demo you just bought.
Step 3: Click on it. A drop down menu should appear. You click on WEAR. You should be wearing your Demo Hair. You will know this by the large box floating above you with the store logo.
This will give you some time to run around In-World for a few hours or so letting you decide if it is right for you. When you have made up your mind you can return to the store and buy the colour and style you like.

To change your style: If you have bought a few choices, to change your look you simply go into your inventory, scroll down to the name of the hair you want to wear (the style in this photo is Sirena Spirit) click on it and choose WEAR in the drop down menu. Wait a few seconds and your new style will replace the old one.

Interview with Pelton Darkstone

DD: What made you decide to be an non human in sl?

PD: Well, actually I still believe I'm human in SL.... after all, I made myself to resemble my RL me.. !
Only my hair grew into ears and my back spine grew out of my body... I can't help that... blame the Lindens... lol !
But to be honest... Nekos fits the Grunge/Urban style (which I believe resembles RL the most) very nicely and I feel pleased with that...
It happens to be the style I like to develop for or dance around in for that matter.

DD: What is the difference between Furries and Nekos?

PD: I can't really tell... I heard they say Furries stand for gay men and Nekos for lesbians, but I believe that is made up by some adolescent kid, with a not so good feel for aesthetics... Because if you pay real close attention, you will notice that very many good developers are either Neko or Furrie. And I just happen to like cats very much.... but if I liked wolves, I would probably resemble one of those and I would be in the Furry camp....

DD: How have you found people to treat you as a Neko?

PD: I found that people are sorta scared or confused by Nekos or Furries... Maybe intimidated... Because clearly their appearance is a display of design... I know I was when I first came to SL... although not very intimidated, but more intrigued. And u know what they say... 'curiosity killed the cat' :)

DD: If given the chance to start over would you and if so would you pick the same type of avatar again?

PD: I guess so... I have an alt... which I made into a Furry first, but now it's a Neko too. I just find them a little more cute and leave more place to design clothes and accessories that go nicely with 'normal' people ! And besides the fact I just like cats... I feel Nemuri-neko and what is noted on wikipedia...: ... is explaining what Neko stands for to me =^^=

DD: Extra Thoughts?

PD: I believe the best designers are very often dragons, who custom build their own sculpties for their appearance... But I wonder in which camp they are... Clearly they aren't Neko... and they are not very Furry either... I guess there is something like the Draggies too ?!

Hhmmm. This kind of got me interested in his point of view so I decided to spend a day myself as a Neko. Let me tell you, it was not as easy to find something I was comfortable in. My Neko experience took me into places I don't normally go, and my look was more animalistic then just most Neko's. I ended up being something of a Hybrid (not really Neko not really Furry )

An Interview with Bixyl Shuftan

DD: What made you decide to be an non human in sl?

BS:I'm something of a science-fiction nut, so the idea appealed to me. In stories, mammal-like aliens, such as "Star Trek's" Caitians have appealed to me. I also wanted to stand out a little. I think my sense of humor may also have played a role.

DD: What is the difference between Furries and Nekos?

BS: Nekos are closer to regular human in appearance. They usually have just the addition of catlike ears and a tail. But some also have additional features such as a thin coat of fur, claws on the hands, or whiskers. A thicker coat of fur and a slight muzzle might be considered neko, but more often would be thought of as a furry. Furries have much more of a mammalian appearance than a neko does, always having fur along with the ears and tail, usually at least a slight muzzle, and often claws and pawlike feet and hands.

Most nekos in comics & anime, and SL, are girls, though there are a few male nekos. Furries have plenty of males and females, though in SL, there appear to be more furry males than females.

DD: How have you found people to treat you as a Furry?

BS: Although some furries grumble about harassment, its my experience that most people in SL respect me well enough, treating me much like anyone else.

DD: If given the chance to start over would you and if so would you pick the same type of avatar again?

BS:I don't see a reason to start over. If I had to, I would probably pick the same one.

DD: Extra Thoughts?

BS:Furries have something of an iffy reputation, due the genre being associated with X-rated artwork and crazzed fanboys. Although SL's furry population has some oddballs, as a group they're no worse, or better, than anyone else. To paraphrase one furball, "Every genre has it's freaks, and ours are the most visible."

In RL, I've never worn a "fursuit," and probably never will.

Interview with Somber Atlass

How long have you been a Wiccan in rl?

I have been wiccan for 13 years. I chose this path a few years after high school; after meeting my totally awesome friend Kathy having her come to me and tell me that I had a gift to share with the world.

DD:How long have you been in sl?

SA:I have only been in sl for about a month now.

DD:I understand you are a Wiccan teacher -how long have you been doing that in rl?

SA: Ahh I have been teaching for almost 4 years.

DD: Do you feel you will start taking students in sl as well?

SA: I have done a lot of thinking about that off and on and I like the Idea. I just need to meet the right people that are serious about wanting to follow this path with an open heart and mind and a willingness to learn.

DD: With all the Pagan/Wiccan groups in sl , do you feel there is too much misinformation for those new to the religion?
SA: Yes there are some out that want to control people, there are some that want all the attention and to be respected for all the wrong reasons, and the others wind up being sexual. When that happens the world gets a twisted view of what we as a pagan comunity really are all about.

DD:How do you feel about the covens in sl and the ritual circles that are preformed in here?

SA:Have not had a chance to see any thing here in sl so I cant comment on that...

DD: Do you feel that the lines between the two religions Wicca and Paganism have been crossed to often in the media?
SA: Yes ! it happens every day on media we are constantly bombarded with going to hell and having people try to tell you whats good for you because its good for them and a lot of people in this world are mindless zombies due to the fact that they let media tell them how to run there lives when they have there own brains to think with.

DD: Any other thoughts ?
SA: I would like to say that you really should not judge some one else's words on what they believe in. If you are intrested in something and you dont have the right answers use your noodle and go research it your self so that way you know the truth and not lies or half truths and when some one ask you about something like wicca you can correct some one thats spread miss information..The solution is changing how we think

SL Burnout

It's been talked about before in both RL newspapers and even this one...people so addicted to SL they loose everything.
I came to SL back in September for a workshop. I was actually a week late but decided to stay anyways. What happened then was my second life overtook my real life. I ;like a lot of in-worlders let my avatar become my identity. I would spend sometimes 20 hours straight in-world a day. Things became so intense that I had no choice but to quit SL altogether for awhile. What did I do while I was gone? I got my real life balanced. With so many of us mixing our real life careers and romances with SL, burnout is bound to happen. So what were the signs I ignored for weeks before I realized I had to do something? 1) Spending more then 5 hours at a time just drifting around SL
2) Having more then a 1000 photos of SL in my computer
3) Letting the dishes pile up in real life
4) Being more upset about being dumped in-world then I did about one in real life
5)Having more then 2 jobs in SL
I got myself unhooked for awhile and now I am back refreshed.

Through the SL Looking Glass

Regular SL- Newspaper readers may know my deep interest in how and why residents choose their specific SL identities. Those identities are primarily visual and we can find that others react more or less positively, according to our avi’s choices of clothes, hair and build. Now, maybe I am wrong but a lot of us here play it safe. We hustle to the skin and body shops as soon as we have scraped together enough Lindens, and we buy ourselves an ideal human figure. We spend time searching for hair far removed from the dreaded bowl cuts and mullets that mark out the noob in our midst.

And I did it too. It’s only recently that I have started to think about the impact that adopting a different body shape or skin ‘condition’, for example, vertically challenged or aged, would have on my own perception of myself in SL. And to be a furry… Well my mind boggled.

Now, I don’t like it when my mind boggles. I want to want confront that confusion and, dare I say it, fear. So I leapt at the chance when the Avatar Identity Research Centre sent notification of a lecture given about furry identity. The lecture promised to discuss avatar identity when expressed through furry, quad (four legged animal shape) and tiny avatars. Of course the topic is huge and the assembled audience (a representative cross-section of neko, quad, furry and human avis; sorry if I missed the tinies present) were keen to air their own experiences of SL. Worryingly, quite a lot of time was given over to the discussion of anti-furry behaviour from griefers in human form, with furry avatars experiencing a range of prejudicial treatment from being barred from nightclubs to grief in IMs.

The lecture, led by Keris Koba, an RL sociologist, discussed why such anti-furism existed, touching on misconceptions about sexual proclivities and the separation between furry and human-form communities on SL. Now this separation may exist because humans, RL humans that is, tend to find and stay in groups of people with a shared interest. We find our blues clubs and a place to race our motorcycles. We dance to “our” music. There is safety in numbers and maybe we play for security in identity as well as escape from the shapes our Real Lives force us to assume. But does it mean, maybe, that separation encourages SL residents to be suspicious of anyone or anything that does not seem “familiar”?

We ran out of time in the lecture. Tinies remain uncharted territory for me. But I want to make sure that I have some experience of identities alternative to my chosen human form before I can comment. Will I be brave enough? We’ll see. In the meantime, if your curiosity is piqued, you can check out the AIRC in “groups”. I may see you at their next lecture.

Beauty is Far Deeper..

Hmm…sometimes stories just walk right up to you. I had promised my very lovely editor that I would try and write an article for the Redlight section. And so I found myself standing like a goof in the middle of one of SL’s public orgy rooms, waiting for inspiration to strike. Several ideas flitted through my mind. The interest some men have wielding penises like light-sabres, for one, and how the orgy rooms seem to be a popular first port of call after Orientation Island, for another. But then he walked past. I’ll let the story unfold through our IM conversation, shall I?

EC: Hi Ancien?

Ancien Beauchamp: Hi

EC: You have just walked past me and I am interested in your avatar

Ancien Beauchamp: Thx (he returns)…also your avatar is interesting... :-)

EC: I have to be frank, it's refreshing to see an avatar that isn't 25 and buff…

Ancien Beauchamp: Well... I have no tattoos

Ancien Beauchamp: and I am some kilos overweight

Ancien Beauchamp: I need glasses

Ancien Beauchamp: and my hair has gone

EC: The sunhat is a touch of genius

Ancien Beauchamp: It’s because of my…er…hair... you know.

We adjourn to a nearby sim with park benches out of the way of the light-sabres and a tattooed avi who is over-interested in the Cortes curves. I find myself worrying about Ancien’s knees…I don’t want to force him to sit on one of the orgy room’s low slung cushions…

EC: I should come clean. I am a journalist for the SL-Newspaper and I was going to write about one of the orgy rooms but it was leaving me kind of uninspired. Recently I wrote about project called the Avatar Identity Research Centre and I got interested in how different avatars are perceived in SL. I have met VERY few age-orientated avatars. I am really interested in why you choose to present yourself in the way you do and what reactions it provokes.

Ancien Beauchamp: Well…I have to admit... this is not the only avi I have. First of all... I have to say that with this one... well... more girls are contacting me than with the others

EC: Are the others male too? More conventional?

Ancien Beauchamp: Yes. One is a very normal male, not so muscular, etc. If you like, I can show you.

EC: Sure!

Ancien Beauchamp: So you can have an idea…

And so he shows me. Gone is the little dumpy man who reminds me of a mix between my grandfather and Truman Capote and there is a, well, handsome male avatar. And even then I can see that there’s something bland in this Ancien compared to the “old” Ancien.

Ancien Beauchamp: Something like that.

EC: Ok. So, what do you think makes “old” Ancien more appealing to women?

Ancien Beauchamp: No, not more appealing… I think they (you) think it is strange that a man chooses an ugly av.

Ancien Beauchamp changes back into dumpy old bald Ancien and asks for my advice on his camisole …one sporting a lovely feminine 1970s floral pattern, in mauve.

Ancien Beauchamp: and the sun hat... :-)

EC: They are excellent choices

Ancien Beauchamp: When this avi is on, I go around and look. It is very interesting to see reactions. But, well... if you want to know... with this avi I haven’t had sex. However, some escorts try to offer me a rebate…( he mimics) “50% off…300L$ normally, but for you 150L$”

EC: I can see that if I print that, more men may be trying on an old avi. Do you notice a difference in the way people speak to you?

Ancien Beauchamp: A couple of girls surprised me; they started talking to me and they said that wasn't so much important how I looked. But other girls, when I said "Hi!” said "Hi-bye"…

EC: Nice...

Ancien Beauchamp: Yes

EC: What prompted you to create Ancien?

Ancien Beauchamp: I wanted to experiment. I started with a "normal" one with size and skin similar to me in RL, very conventional, then I tried to change something, to have a more muscular one and then this one, old and deformed. I always went to the same places but with different looks and I experimented with different reactions.

EC: So, what have you got out of the experience?

Ancien Beauchamp: Before I tried this “old” avi, I thought that only good looking female avatars were interesting people but then I started to be interested also in other ones.

Ancien Beauchamp: but they must have something in their profiles

EC: for example?

Ancien Beauchamp: I don’t know…a phrase or a picture, or something else…

And, do you know, I found myself hoping that there was something in my profile that Ancien liked. The person behind the keyboard had a sexier mind than one could hope for in a room full of porn Jedi. Of course, these are the edited highlights of a conversation that ranged over music and SL orgy rooms, and that started to build a friendship. I find myself feeling sorry for the “hi-bye” girls. They have missed out. Big time.

Here Be Dragons

Second Life is amazing for the variety of inhabitants that live here. Avatars of all types are roaming the continents, Humans , Furries, Birds,Insects, Comic strip characters, Aliens, Eyeballs, and my favorite , the Dragons!!

These are amazing creatures. I am privileged to know a few and found myself wanting to know more about them. I turned to my friend Dezaria Cazalet , whom I have known for about 5 months. When I first met her she was in human form. Next time I saw her at a dance club she was a dragon!! She was not much larger than I am at that time. Quite sweet and wearing a swim suit over her dragon body. I thought it was a temporary outfit for some party or contest.
After I saw her a few more times I realized it was not just a costume. It was Dezaria!I still did not ask any questions. I figured to each her own. As time passed I kept watching and listening . There was talk of becoming a bigger dragon. Then came the invitation to a hatching! Well, I did go and found myself facing a huge gorgeous purple skinned dragon breathing fire and smoke . Her foot was bigger than I am! She told me this was her Astral dragon. She took me for a ride on her back high in the sky. Well, landing was not quite on the mark for her first attempt . I fell about 200 meters ! It was worth it .Much to surprise I was invited to another hatching recently.

A new and gorgeous dragon was hatched called Storm! I found out later that this was a different species of Dragon , a holiday gift from friends. Finally I found that I needed to understand this dragon thing so I decided to ask. I figured I would do a short article for the paper and that would be that.As my questioning progressed I realized this was not a simple thing at all! It is very involved and complicated.. I began to take trips to the dragon locales .Each venture showed me that an article would have to be much longer that anticipated. I would like to tell you more about dragons and what is involved. Stay tuned!!

In my last segment I tried to explain why I am writing about dragons at all. They are most intriguing!! Dezaria said “ I have a dragon heart – it is the most tenderest and kindest of hearts – a dragon sized heart big enough for the whole world”. She told me that most who become dragons know before what dragon they want to be. Oh , yes, there are many forms and species of dragon. You can be the dragon of your dreams!! Personalities count!I visited the Isle of Wyrms to see their territories. My first visit took me to the Cathedral. This is a massive structure m very beautiful, where dragons meet and where the eggs are kept. If there is to be a hatching there must be eggs and there they are in all their glory, each different from the other in texture for the various types of dragon. One can buy a Hatchling or a Wyrmling at any time at the Cathedral. There are scheduled dates for the release of the adult dragons. The Wyrms , adults are limited in number (usually only 10 per species)and there is a lottery for those who are able to buy them. Those with dragon hearts wait for the scheduled release dates (Equinox & Solstice) with anticipation.

I visited Limbo on the isle. Here I found a sandbox for residents, dragon or otherwise and next to this a market place with effects for dragons and other items for humans and alternative avatars.

The Isle is actually 10 sims, including residential areas with massive homes for the dragons. I flew through the areas where I was permitted to fly and admired the surroundings. There is a stage for a drum circle for dragon dancing there every other Friday. Nearby is a story telling circle that alternates with the Friday dances. Here the dragons can unleash their talents in tale telling and poetry. There are wandering around in SL .They explore, build, dance , and do everything that anyone else does in SL.Dezaria still has eggs to hatch! I am waiting to see another hatching and have a ride on a dragon!I f you are interested in learning more about dragons and their lives be sure to visit the Cathedral on the Isle of Wyrms, “Isle or Wyrms Cathedral 125,90,102” and I know you will meet some interesting creatures there. You can also visit Grendal’s Children and W&W Designs to find out about dragons there. Perhaps you will find you also have a dragon heart.

Socially Speaking Part 2

How many of the people on your friend's list do you really need there? This being the end of the year, a lot of people are weeding out last year's junk, and that might include people.
Yes, the voice of one of SL's harshest critics is back with something to chew on. I am one who would have to say that half the people on my friends list really shouldn't be there. Then why are they? Because I am too much of a softy to say no to anyone when they ask me. The ones that do belong there are the ones I talk to at least once a week.
Many people in SL (much to my chagrin in RL too) are people collectors. They meet you once and decide you need to be in their little black books. The question is why? Why if they have no intention of talking to you again?
Well in my case it is a price I have to pay for being a Media personality. This is a responsibility I agreed to when I became one, but many SLer's out there aren't in my position and therefore don't take it as part of life. They do in fact dump people from their list if too much time has gone without contact.
So which side of the social circle are you on? Are you a collector or a collection prize?

Why do people Judge in second life

Well most of you have seen this problem in second life, people judge and bring others down to the point of leaving second life or even more kill themselves in real life.
Two months ago, I read a story from my news in real life. A 15 year old young boy, was playing second life, people were making fun of him all the time because he admitted that he was gay in his profile.
I'm not gonna reveal my source this lady asked not too be named, lets just say it is his real life mom, yes she plays second life now, for reasons that we should all see. Her goal is to try and make second life better for people so this does not happen, this 15 year old boy, ended up killing himself in real life over a video game, yes i do admit he was underage, but still he should not of had to go that far. I pray that the people who made fun of him realize what they did to his heart in real life.

Some of the questions I have had in the past is, why people get so down that they end up wanting too kill themselves? Why do people let video games go to their head? So I an gonna go out and talk to some therapists in second life, and have some of my questions answered, as you will all read this I hope it will change the way people judge others
.
I'm am here with Ceileidh Ohara, she is a second life therapist, I'm gonna ask her some questions and you will see what happens to
o people.
Zaclegend Usher: Hello Ceileidh Ohara, As you know I work for the newspaper, and I'm doing a paper on judging people in second life, how do you feel about this topic?
Ceileidh Ohara: Well I'd say judging people in SL is a pretty stupid thing to do. ;) Mostly because you don't really know the person on the other end of that avatar, but then, I think judging people (and I"m assuming a negative context here) is just pretty much wrong anywhere, not just SL.
Zaclegend Usher: Why do you think people judge people in second life?
Ceileidh Ohara: Same reasons they do so everywhere else. Ignorance, fear, a need to feel superior by making others feel inferior or a need to control everyone around them in order to justify their own morality
Zaclegend Usher: This brings down the person that plays that av, Do you have any ways that the person who is being judged, can keep calm, not run out of second life, or worse kill themselves like that 15 year old did?
Ceileidh Ohara: The experiences people have in Second Life are complex ones. It isn't as simple as "it's just a video game". Second Life isn't just a game, it is, at the core, a created community. People joined together by shared interests, rather than just the luck of where they happened to be born. So when you are an unstable person in real life, you're bringing that here, into Second Life, as well. One of the strange things about online community and relationships is how intense they can be. Because so many things are stripped away, and ultimately all you have for dealing with people are these words and animations we have. They give a false sense of intimacy. People think they "really know" someone, and tend to behave according to that mistaken assumption, but they really don't know that person. Too often, people do the corollary, which is that they think they are "really known" or that someone "really gets them" or "really understands them" that's just as false a sense. So what happens is they find out someone they thought they were very intimate with doesn't -really- know them, and it -hurts-
Zaclegend Usher: That sounds so true, Is there ways too avoid being judged?
Ceileidh Ohara: There is no way to avoid being judged. It's human nature to judge people. The only thing you can do is learn to recognize inside yourself when you're judging other people unfairly, and really examine your own reactions to people. Sure, you can hide things about yourself if you wish, Just avoid not telling folks things, that's one good protection you can use to your advantage. In fact, I strongly recommend that because there's no need to tell everyone everything about yourself even when you do, that, though, people start judging you for being 'cagey' :)
Zaclegend Usher: If I had advice, I would say just walk away and not talk too them is this good advice?
Ceileidh Ohara: The real issue is learning more about caring for yourself better. Know that you're going to be judged, and realize that anyone who judges you negatively over interactions here in SL have their own limitations, and they don't define you.
Ceileidh Ohara: Oh absolutely, people need to learn how to ignore others. You have no obligation to listen to what anyone has to say here
Zaclegend Usher: OK, on a closing note do you have anything you would like to add without me asking?
Ceileidh Ohara: I want to point up that comment I just made, to emphasize it. People in second life do not define you. You define yourself. If they don't like that definition, find another sim to hang out on. There's plenty.
Zaclegend Usher: Thats what i do.
Zaclegend Usher: Ok, well I thank you for your time, and I wish you alot of luck, in your therapy route.

As you all see, people are judged every day in second life, All you can do to stop it, is walk away, please don't stand around and take it, this will drag you down and make you hurt even more, and to the parent who lost your son in real life, I am sorry it went down to that, he had a great looking life in front of him. If you need anything just IM me, I support what your trying to do in second life, and hope you will keep it up, I wish you luck, and keep on fighting the fight.

This is Zaclegend Usher
Thank you for reading about what I had to say, you can IM me in game for further talk about this subject :-)
